Laser Vein Reduction Q & A

What are spider veins and reticular veins?

Spider veins are thin, thread-like veins that appear close to the surface of the skin. They’re cherry red in color and usually appear on the face, arms, and legs. Spider veins are only about one to two millimeters in diameter, and generally have a linear or branch-like pattern.

Reticular veins — also called blue veins — form deeper under the skin’s surface and have a blue or green hue. They’re generally larger than spider veins but not as large as varicose veins, ranging from one to three millimeters in diameter.

Both spider veins and reticular veins are caused by increased pressure, and a number of factors may contribute to the development of visible veins, including:

  • Heredity
  • Hormonal shifts
  • Pregnancy
  • Weight fluctuation

What is laser vein reduction?

Laser vein reduction is a noninvasive treatment in which an intense beam of light is directed at the vein. The heat from the laser causes the blood inside the vessel to coagulate, and then the vessel collapses. Over the next few weeks, the vessel disappears.

Dr. Furst uses the xeo® aesthetic laser device, which is a safe and innovative technology that allows him to deliver a precise dosage of energy to each blood vessel without damaging the surrounding tissues. In the hands of an experienced professional, xeo is safe, and there are very few side effects or complications.

After the procedure, there is little to no downtime. However, you will need to carefully follow Dr. Furst’s instructions regarding sunscreen and sun exposure.

How many laser vein treatments will I need?

Depending on the size and number of veins, you may need two to six treatments. In general, it’s recommended that the treatments are scheduled four to six weeks apart.

Am I a good candidate for laser vein reduction?

Because lasers are noninvasive and work well in smaller areas, laser vein treatment is most effective for spider veins, reticular veins, and cherry angiomas.

Dr. Furst offers vein evaluations and can determine if laser vein reduction is a good choice for you. To schedule a consultation, call Furst MD Aesthetics or book an appointment online.
