Chronic sinusitis is a common condition in which your sinuses — the cavities around your nasal passages — become inflamed and blocked. While acute sinusitis lasts about a week, sinusitis is considered chronic when you’ve experienced symptoms for at least 12 weeks despite attempts to treat it.
Chronic sinusitis can be caused by a variety of conditions. The most common causes include:
Balloon sinuplasty is a procedure that relieves the pain and pressure due to chronic sinusitis by using a balloon catheter. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration, balloon sinuplasty safely and effectively treats patients who aren’t responding well to antibiotics, nasal steroids, or over-the-counter drugs.
Similar to how in angioplasty, balloons are used to open blocked arteries, in sinuplasty, balloons are used to open blocked sinuses. Balloon sinuplasty is less invasive than conventional sinus surgery. There’s no removal of bone or tissue, and the natural structure of the sinuses are preserved.
Balloon sinuplasty is an outpatient procedure performed in Dr. Furst’s office. During the procedure, you may receive either general or local anesthesia. You can talk to Dr. Furst beforehand about your anesthesia options.
To begin with, Dr. Furst gently inserts a specially-designed catheter into your nose to reach the inflamed sinus cavity. Then, he slowly inflates a small balloon, which widens and restructures the walls of your sinus passage. This helps drain mucus from the blocked sinus and restores normal sinus drainage.
While recovery time varies for each patient, it’s typically quick. Most patients return to work and normal activities within a couple of days.
The results of balloon sinuplasty vary from patient to patient; however, a clinical study reported that sinus symptoms had improved in 95% of patients after a period of nine months. In another study, patients reported symptom improvement up to two years after having the procedure.
If you’re suffering from sinus pain, swelling, or build-up, a balloon sinuplasty can provide the relief you’re looking for. To get started, contact ENT specialist Dr. Furst by calling the office or booking an appointment online.
